New Regulation on NIE Number Applications

By: Transfer Business Administration Services

As of July 1 of this year Spain has put into force a new regulation on NIE number applications. The regulation, which has been issued in the National Bulletin of State (BOE) requires that from this date on, applicants need to file their NIE application in person and can no longer make us of a power of attorney to authorize a third party to apply for a NIE number.

EU nationals can now apply for a NIE number in Spain in the following 2 ways:
1. Apply in person in Spain, at the Oficina de Extranjeros (“department for foreigners”) at the nearest National Police Headquarters (Policía Nacional)
2. Apply in person at the nearest Spanish Embassy or Consulate in their country

The NIE Number (Número de identidad de extranjero) is a tax identification number to be used on all official documents in Spain. Prior to starting up a business, working, or purchasing or selling a property in Spain, it is a requirement by law that every individual, no matter of which nationality, Spanish resident or not, possesses a NIE Number.
